An annual ranking report has been made by DOI in 2008. This report provides the customers an idea regarding the reputable companies out there. With the help of this ranking, customers would know if they are dealing with the right company. Top companies ranked in the list are mercury general group, American express, Amex assurance, united services automobile assurance group, everyday insurance, Utica mutual.

Whilst ranking is an important aspect of an insurance company, this should not be the only criteria which consumers should assess when deciding which company is best to choose. A buyer can also take feedbacks from their friends, neighbors, relatives and colleagues about the company they are dealing with. Ranking also misses some points; it never calculate the complaints which customer has directly registered to the company but only includes the problems submitted through DOI to the company.

Insurance providers should be transparent about the progress made by the companies in the past years. A proper table should be presented and maintained to keep record of the progress and inflation made by the company.
