Indeed, always being positive is a good attitude. However, the optimism of Governor Charlie Crist seems to have taken a lot of negative critiques. Many say that Crist’s $69.2 billion state budget proposal for 2010-11 is full of pie-eyed optimism when Florida badly needs hard-headed realism.

The governor also refuses to consider layoffs, pay cuts, furloughs or increases in insurance premiums for state workers, and insists on paying bonuses to teachers. However, a lot said that this won’t work with private-sector employers and workers who have seen their pay and benefits decrease or their businesses go under and their jobs recede.

Sen. Mike Haridopolos, R-Merritt Island, offered the refreshing view of a…

Just like other businesses, the term life insurance industry continuously present new options to catch the attention of their potential clients. There are different payout options, new products, and new packages.

With regards to payout options, instead of paying out your life insurance policy as a single lump sum, some companies now offer death benefits as an annuity. This annuity will pay out the death benefit over time and in the long run, your beneficiaries will receive a larger payment than if they were to take it all at once.

With the products, a few companies now focus on giving life insurance products to older customers. Although it may not have much…

As you know, Cover Florida was specially designed to assist the state’s 3.8 million uninsured residents by providing an affordable and accessible alternative to expensive health insurance plans. After a year of service though, its leading insurer wants to raise premiums by 30 percent, citing figures showing a predicted 23 percent loss at the existing rates.

“We’re losing quite a bit of money,” said Randy Kammer, vice president of regulatory affairs and public policy for Jacksonville-based Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida. “For every dollar that we take in, we lose almost a dollar and a quarter with the administrative and the health expenses with the products.”

The state’s Office of…

Last Wednesday, Governor Charlie Crist said in a very hopeful tone that he does not expect to call for layoffs or pay cuts in the state budget proposal he sends to legislators. On the contrary, House Speaker Larry Cretul, R-Ocala, and Senate President Jeff Atwater, R-North Palm Beach, seem very cynical about how state employees will fare.

“You know I’m an optimist, some might think too much of an optimist — I don’t,” Crist said when asked if his budget will necessitate layoffs of state employees, pay cuts or an end of paid-up health insurance for employees.

Quite the opposite of Crist’s belief, some legislative leaders have said that the state budget…

As we all cannot expect for a rush change in the health care industry, a few organizations attempt different ways on how they can lower health insurance premium. For instance, the Student Health and Counseling Center is working to reduce insurance costs for students.

Last Tuesday, the UNM Student Health Insurance Committee members gather to discuss how to make health insurance affordable with benefits. Beverly Kloeppel, Student Health Center director, said students need health insurance because health care is expensive without it.

“You really don’t have to have some major health problem. All you have to do is have an accident — fall on a skateboard, hit your head on a bike…

Last year, a significant increase in wild animal car insurance claims has been detected. According to French Environment Ministry, in 2007 there were 6000 claims to the state guarantee fund (Fond de garantie) for road accidents involving wild animals. This figure rose sevenfold, to over 42,000 claims, with the level of indemnity rising from €9 million to €21 million.

They say the reason for such a large increase in claims is not because of the inexplicable surge in the number of wild animals crossing the road or an increase in the negligence of drivers. The reason is simply that the rules regarding the claims changed midway through 2007.
